Fill a Bag for $7!

Today Kevin and I took off with a list of about 7 sales to hit. We never made it to the first sale of the day. My GPS wouldn't come on (again)! I think I have just about worn it out! It's only 3 years old, but it gets used every weekend a LOT! Sometimes it just won't come on, or it gets stuck and won't move. I've tried hooking it up to my computer for upgrades, but that doesn't work either.

By the time we got the GPS to come on, it was time to head to the second sale on my list, a church barn sale! I've been to this barn sale every year for a few years now and I always find some good stuff. Today was "fill a bag for $7" day and collectibles were priced separately.

Kevin picked up a couple wool sweaters (I swear, he is turning into an 80 year old man right before my eyes!!), and a couple of other things he thought I would like. I picked up a few collectibles and a few things to fill the bag.

When we got to the car, I asked what he got that he thought I would like (since it was buried in the bag). He got a weather vane arrow and an old potato masher. I thought that sounded cool-he's finally getting what I'm looking for! I asked him where he found them because I never saw them...he said, "up on that balcony area"...gulp! I asked if he meant the "collectibles area" and he said "yeah".

I explained to him that they were priced individually and that you're supposed to pay for them in the collectibles area only and they couldn't be part of our $7 bag. He didn't know, he wasn't trying to steal from a church-he just saw them, thought I'd like them, saw they weren't priced and assumed they'd fit in our bag.

After we got the rest of our stuff loaded in the car, I went back in and gave another donation to cover the two things he mistakenly added to our bag. It didn't end up being the smokin' hot deal I thought I was getting, but at least I have a clear conscience for going back and paying for those things!

After that, every sale we went to I felt like I hit the jackpot! I haven't had such a good day junkin' like this in a lonnnnnng time!

Here are the tablecloths all opened up.

The last tablecloth had two repair spots. The repairs were what convinced me to buy this tablecloth. I think they give it character! Who repairs tablecloths these days? I've come a LONG way in my tablecloth collecting haven't I? 

I also got a ghost and pumpkin blow mold, 2 antique wood planes, a small wooden dresser (at the church barn sale for $5), and an old rusty hand drill.

I can't believe it! I don't want to believe it! But it's T R U E! My oldest son is 21 years old today!! Yikes! That makes me officially O L D !!

Quick Junkin' Trip...

Today's outing was a quick trip in between groceries, laundry and housework. Kevin and Eric left around 6:30 this morning to get started on their "Labor of Love" project. They are working on a 100 year old house about 4 miles away for an 80 year old woman. They are putting down a new kitchen floor, painting and putting up some trim.

They have 5 people on their team. Labor of Love has a county-wide repair/build/clean/rake blitz every year at this time where local churches get together to tackle projects for the elderly, impaired and low income people and families in our community. This is Kevin's 4th year. He has been a house captain for the past 3 years.

Since they were already gone, I decided to try my luck at a barn sale, an estate sale, two antique shops, a consignment shop and a couple garage sales. Typing it all out makes it seem like so much more than it was! The barn sale was a dud. I guess if I was to use my frog and prince grading scale, I'd say the barn sale was a squished, dried up dead frog-it was such a waste of time!

The estate sale was packed! It was out in the country and there had to be at least 25 cars lining the long driveway when I got there. It had a really unique staircase in the middle of the house. It was only one person wide, and it spiraled up to a loft/office and down to the basement.

When I got there, I was pleasantly surprised to see the sale was being conducted by one of my favorite estate sale companies. I have been to more of their sales than any other company. Their prices are, for the most part, reasonable, and their staff is friendly and they are always very well organized with EVERYTHING priced and ready to go when they open.

Had I gotten to the sale just a few minutes earlier, I could have picked up a set of Pyrex Friendship bowls...I just realized that I've never bought any Pyrex in that pattern. Maybe I have a mental block when it comes to that style...my mom had it when I was growing up and I remember carrying the biggest bowl in the set in the door at my grandma's house and tripping and dropping the bowl. It hit the cement porch and shattered and ruined not only the bowl, but the potato salad that was in it too!

The only things I got today were from the estate sale and from a little garage sale on the last day...

The quilts are in really rough shape...would you have bought them? Or would you have walked right on by? What if the price was super cheap? How about if they were $1.50 each?? I couldn't pass them up at that price. I felt like I needed to rescue them! They are hand stitched!!! All that work and they get neglected and tossed away for $1.50 each. I plan to try to turn the Grandma's Garden quilt into a bag for my granny cart. The other one I think I can make a couple of pillow out of...

Brrr...Chilly Junkin' Day!

Today was the first day of my hometown's Community Wide Yard Sale! I look forward to this big sale every year! The past two years, I've run into one of my cousins at one of the sales. I think the treasure hunting/junking gene must run in the family!! She just turned 90 and she is addicted to sales just as just much as I am. I was very disappointed that we didn't bump into each other today!

I must have hit at least 50 garage/yard sales today. When I first started (around 9am), it was really cold and really quiet. I was shocked at how few people were out and about! It took until about noon for traffic to pick up and even then it still seemed pretty light.

I enjoy this sale because it is in the city/town that my family on my mom's side is from, so it is like an old reunion going back and seeing how things have changed since I was there last. I went to two sales that were across the street from the house my grandparents used to live in. They lived there until 1980 when they retired and moved north.

When I was a kid, their house seemed absolutely HUGE. Today, it seemed about a tenth of the size it seemed when I was a kid! They used to have a giant Magnolia tree out front that they planted the year my mom graduated from high school. The last time I saw the tree, it was ginormous! Now the tree is gone, and there isn't  anything left to show there ever was such a glorious tree there.

Prices were all over the board at the sales today. Some people had prices higher than antique store prices, some people were middle of the road, and some people were super cheap. For the most part, it looked like run of the mill, everyday garage sale junk at every sale. There wasn't very much that was different or intriguing. There was a HUGE over abundance of baby stuff! Some yards and garages looked like they just threw up all kinds of baby gear! There were a few houses that would have given Babies R Us a run for their money!

The sun was shining and the skies were blue-even though it was chilly-it was a nice day!!!

 Old wooden kids desk and chair set $8. Needs some paint, but it is in great shape and is still sturdy and solid!

 I saw this guy at the first sale I went to and they wanted $10 for him. I found him again at another sale a couple of hours later for only $1!! I'm glad I waited!!!

 Some tins-ten cents to fifty cents.

 Four tablecloths-a quarter each and a tea towel  for a quarter.

 An EAPG punch bowl with stand, cups and hooks for $2 and I thought I'd try the Aqua Globes-maybe they will help me keep my plants alive!

 A white chenille bedspread, a purple toile keepsake box and a quarter apron.

 Older Little golden books, waeschterbach Christmas mugs, Easter paper mache eggs, vintage carousel tumblers $4-for everything!

 Flowery pink hat and vintage thermos-$2.50.

All total, I spent $24.60.

 I remembered to take my camera and took a couple of shots of some awesome barns.

I also got a surprise in the mail today...

I think it fits in nicely with my other vintage red stuff...what do you think??

Tomorrow Kevin is working with a group of guys on a few projects for an elderly lady in our town. They are working with Labor of Love, and they are replacing her kitchen floor, painting  and putting up some trim. I'm going to a couple of sales that start tomorrow and catching up on laundry and groceries-then we have vball in the evening. I'm glad our hectic volleyball schedule is winding down! I'm ready for some free evenings!!
